On Wednesday 7th December 2016, financial journalist and best selling author, Nomi Prins gave a talk in the Library at the Royal College of Surgeons about the future of the global financial system.

And please do be sure to share it if you find it interesting.

Nomi is a renowned journalist and author of the highly acclaimed books All the Presidents’ Bankers and Other People’s Money. She’s previously occupied top positions at Goldman Sachs, Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and JP Morgan.

Despite Trump’s big talk about shaking up the system Nomi’s not expecting too much to change. The ‘government machine’, as she calls it, is still in place and it doesn’t let any president make too many changes whether their name is George W. Bush, Barack Obama or Donald Trump.

Plus, powerful central bankers like Janet Yellen, Mario Draghi and Mark Carney still have years to go before they step down. A radical change in central bank policy therefore seems unlikely and Trump won’t be the one to change that.

Indeed, despite bashing Wall Street on the campaign trail the President-elect has already added a number of bankers to his White House staff.

This goes against everything the American people have just voted for, says Nomi. These appointments have the phrase ‘status quo’ written all over them.

She argued it’s a worrying sign and could trigger a vicious response from the people. It’s not even that Trump doesn’t understand the public mood, he just ‘doesn’t care’.
